Oil and gas platforms are designed to withstand the harsh environment of offshore oil and gas exploration, production, and drilling. The topside is an offshore platform that contains all the equipment for drilling, production, storage and offloading of oil or gas. The jacket is a structure that supports the topside.
Oil & Gas Platform Structural Design:
The structure design for an offshore platform typically includes a jacket with its associated topsides. This is because the jacket provides stability for the platform while also protecting it from waves. The jackets are made up of three primary structural components: columns, deck beams and stiffeners. These components are built with steel plates welded together to form a rigid framework. A jacket also includes topside equipment, such as docks. The columns are placed at equal intervals around the periphery of the jacket and are attached to the deck beams and stiffeners. The top of each column is attached to a plate at the top of a floor beam, which in turn is bolted to a plate on the deck beam.
Offshore platforms are the heart of a petroleum production system. They are the base for all other operations on the water. The offshore platform is designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and provide a stable foundation for production equipment.
The offshore platform is built with two major structures, the topside and jacket structure.
